Sustainability

Sustainability is a method

Why timber makes sustainability visible, in the building itself rather than only on paper, and how we source, plan and produce so that not a single cubic metre goes to waste.

Timber as a CO₂ store

Timber stores carbon, for the life of the building

As it grows, a tree captures CO₂ from the atmosphere and stores the carbon in the wood. Once this timber is built in, the carbon stays bound for as long as the structure stands.

The larger the structure, the more carbon stays bound within it, for the entire service life of the building. And on the production footprint your project is scored on under EPD, EC3 and LEED v5, mass timber is named as a low-carbon material. We support that documentation, referencing the industry-wide glulam EPD (APA) until our own is in place.

Our practice

Five things we actually do

  1. 1

    Source responsibly

Our glulam is FSC-certified and comes from responsibly managed forests. And because we source every cubic metre ourselves, every cubic metre counts, economically and ecologically.

  2. 2

    Design to save material

For each project our engineering office chooses the structure that carries with the least material, from truss girders to solid-web beams for long spans.

  3. 3

    Reduce offcut

A continuous 3D model drives cutting in the factory. What is not needed is never cut in the first place.

  4. 4

    Use residual wood

What is left over from cutting heats our production and, as district heating, the neighbourhood in St. Vith too.

  5. 5

    Generate our own power

Photovoltaics on the factory roofs supply power for production.

Responsibility

Sustainable also means: for people and region

  • Run by its owners

Our partners run the company themselves and work in it day to day. Decisions are made in-house and for the long term, not for the next quarter.

  • Jobs in the region

Production in St. Vith, engineering office in Aachen, structural detailing in Beiler: around 80 jobs in the border region, with local value creation.

  • Cooperation with FH Aachen

We have cooperated with FH Aachen for years: students do their internship and write their thesis with us, and many then join us permanently.

  • Entry and in-house training

Young school-leavers and career changers join us in many areas and are trained in-house, supported by our experienced staff.
