Four steps, and no surprises

You send your model or project documents

A 3D model in Cadwork, Revit, IFC or a comparable format is ideal. For the first technical alignment, PDF drawings are enough: material, design values, standard sections and feasibility. The 3D model is needed before detailing and production start.

We define scope and material together

From glulam only to connection engineering, detailing, CNC processing, steel components and pre-assembly. Material and design values are aligned with your Engineer of Record early. You receive a transparent quotation based on the agreed scope, quantities and unit rates.

Your decision

Your Engineer of Record approves, you release

Sections, connection forces and the final shop drawings go back to your side for review. Production release means final release for fabrication by you or your Engineer of Record, and the agreed payment received. From that moment the agreed lead time runs.

We fabricate, pack and ship

Numbered members, wrapped in white protective film against dirt in transit, delivered to your own facility or straight to the project site in Canada or the United States.

Your company and your Engineer of Record own the building engineering: structural concept, loads and local codes, primary member design, project management and erection. From there, LIGNA systems takes on exactly the scope you need, from glulam supply and connection engineering to detailing, CNC processing, steel components, pre-assembly and delivery.

What we touch, and what we don’t

We work within your structural concept.

We propose optimizations where they improve fabrication, cost or logistics: a different frame spacing, a three-hinged frame, a section from our standard grid, a splice for transport, a different connection position. Any change affecting the primary structural system remains subject to approval by your Engineer of Record.

Glulam to your sections. Engineering, processing, steel and erection stay with you.

Component supply

Glulam plus connection engineering and steel components. Further processing and erection stay with you.

Fabricated timber package

Glulam, connections, steel, detailing and CNC processing, pre-assembled where useful. Engineer of Record, project management and erection stay with you.

We add the part that gives you an advantage.

Contractors with their own engineering and processing usually take Level 1 or 2. Nothing you already do efficiently yourself needs to move to us.

Timber components and material supply

Supply of glulam and other timber components according to the existing structural design and the specified member sizes.

Connection engineering

Engineering and development of the required timber connections, based on your existing structural concept.

Detailing and production preparation

If the project is structurally designed but not yet detailed for production, we take over the necessary detailing and prepare the components for manufacturing.

Production from existing data

If you already have a production-ready Cadwork, Revit, IFC or other 3D model, we work directly from the project data you have.

CNC processing

CNC machining and cutting where it is required. Contractors who prefer to carry out their own processing keep this within their own scope.

Steel components

Connection plates, brackets and other steel components required for the timber structure can be included in the supply package.

Prefabrication and pre-assembly

Depending on the project, components can be prepared or pre-assembled before shipment, to reduce the work on site.

Logistics and delivery

Components are packaged and prepared for efficient transport, directly to the project site or to your own facility.

With you and your Engineer of Record

Your Engineer of Record plans and signs off the building, so the building engineering stays where the responsibility already sits. We propose the most economical timber solution and take on the product engineering, fabrication and supply of the timber members.

LIGNA systems works within the structural concept provided by your company and your Engineer of Record, and the building engineering remains their responsibility. Optimizations we propose take effect only after approval by your Engineer of Record. Every service, from connection engineering to fabrication and delivery, is agreed in writing with the quotation.

We add European supply and production capacity: glulam from binderholz, connection engineering, CNC joinery and steel components from one plant, shipped to Canada or the United States.

Material and limits

What the plant can cut

Material European spruce glulam GL28h, CE-marked. Our standard for the United States and Canada.
Design values We provide the GL28h design values and a comparison with North American layups such as 24f. Whether the material is accepted for your project is confirmed by your Engineer of Record, early in the process.
Certification, United States ANSI-certified glulam available as an option, through our binderholz partnership.
Certification, Canada CE-marked GL28h is not Canadian-certified. If your Engineer of Record requires Canadian-certified (CSA) glulam, we source it as an alternative from a certified supplier, at a higher price and possibly a longer lead time. Both options are named in every quotation.
Standard sections Widths 80 to 260 mm in 20 mm steps (approx. 3 1/8 to 10 1/4 in). Depths 120 to 1,240 mm in 40 mm steps (approx. 4 3/4 to 48 3/4 in). Largest standard section 260 × 1,240 mm. Imperial sections on request.
Larger sections Block-glued sections up to approx. 640 × 1,240 mm (25 × 48 3/4 in), at an additional cost.
Length 39 ft (12.0 m) per member fits a 40 ft container and is the preferred length. Longer members are possible depending on the project, by break-bulk shipping or through binderholz transports. Ask us before you design around a limit.
Lead time Typically 10 to 12 weeks from production release: final release for fabrication by you or your Engineer of Record, and the agreed payment received. Depending on the destination and the confirmed production slot.

Design with these sections from the start and the project gets simpler and more economical. Sections, quantities and the delivery date are confirmed with the written quotation.

What we need to get started

What a reliable quotation needs

Structural concept The structural concept and the responsibility of your Engineer of Record are defined. Final member sizes can be aligned together, based on our available sections and production capabilities.
Model or drawings For the first technical alignment, PDF drawings are enough. For detailing and production we need a 3D model that defines the geometry and all relevant timber members.
File formats Cadwork, Revit, IFC or any comparable 3D format can be used. We can work with the model format already used by your team.

Material partnership

Where the glulam comes from

LIGNA systems is not a glulam producer. The laminated stock comes from binderholz, one of the world’s leading glulam producers, and is fabricated into your members in our own plant. That split is the point: an industrial supply chain behind the material, one shop responsible for the engineering and the cutting.

What this means for you

The partnership is what makes ANSI-certified glulam available and dependable for projects in the United States, not a one-off order.

The short answers

Who is responsible for the structural design?

Your company and your Engineer of Record. The structural concept, loads and local codes, primary member design and the confirmation of materials and design values stay on your side. On that basis, LIGNA systems proposes economical sections and takes on connection engineering, detailing, fabrication and delivery.

Can I order just part of this?

Yes. Each service can be included on its own or combined into a broader package. Some shops order timber components only, others hand over everything from connection engineering through to delivery. We define the scope with you before the quotation.

Does LIGNA systems change my structure?

Not on our own. We work within your structural concept and tell you where a different frame spacing, a three-hinged frame, a standard section or a transport splice would make the project more economical. Any change to the primary structural system is reviewed and approved by your Engineer of Record before it goes into the model.

Do I get connection hardware and steel plates?

They can be. Connection plates, brackets and other steel components required for the timber structure can be included in the supply package, and we can engineer the timber connections themselves based on your structural concept. Shops that prefer to keep this in house simply leave it out of the scope.

How long and how deep can a member be?

The largest standard section is 260 × 1,240 mm (approx. 10 1/4 × 48 3/4 in), block-glued sections up to approx. 640 × 1,240 mm are possible at an additional cost. The preferred length is 39 ft (12.0 m) per member, which fits a 40 ft container. Longer members are possible depending on the project, by break-bulk shipping or through binderholz transports. Ask us before you design around a limit.

How long does it take, and when does the clock start?

Typically 10 to 12 weeks from production release, depending on the destination and the confirmed production slot. The clock starts at production release: final release for fabrication by you or your Engineer of Record, and the agreed payment received. Not when you first contact us.

Which file do you need?

PDF drawings are enough for the first technical alignment. For detailing and production, a 3D model: Cadwork, Revit, IFC or any comparable format. We can work with the model format already used by your team. A transfer link is fine for large files.

Is European glulam accepted in Canada?

Our standard is CE-marked GL28h, which is not Canadian-certified. We provide the design values and the comparison with Canadian requirements, and your Engineer of Record decides whether it can be used on the project. If Canadian-certified (CSA) glulam is required, we source it as an alternative from a certified supplier, at a higher price and possibly a longer lead time. Every quotation names both options, so you can place the order before the material question is finally settled.

What happens between quotation and production release?

Six steps. Material and design values are aligned with your Engineer of Record. LIGNA systems proposes standard sections, your Engineer of Record confirms them. Your Engineer of Record provides the connection forces, LIGNA systems engineers the connections. We prepare the production model and the shop drawings. You or your Engineer of Record release them for fabrication. With the agreed payment received, that is the production release, and the lead time starts.
